Map a key label to a wheel position
The Camelot wheel is a notation system used by many DJs to group conventional major and minor keys into numbered positions. This local mapper starts with a key you enter. It returns the corresponding code, the relative major or minor at the same number, and the neighboring codes one step around the same letter ring.
It does not discover a key from audio. It does not inspect a track library, recommend a set, or promise that two songs will blend. Every result inherits the accuracy and scope of your entered key.

Reading the code
Each conventional key maps to a number from 1 through 12 and a letter. A marks minor; B marks major. A minor is 8A, while C major is 8B. Those two keys are relatives: they share a basic key signature but have different tonal centers.
Moving one number clockwise or counterclockwise while keeping the letter identifies commonly referenced same-mode neighbors. From 8A, the immediate entries are 7A and 9A. The numbering is circular, so 12 connects back to 1. These relationships are a navigation aid, not a law of musical quality.
The result labels each relationship in words. That matters because a bare code can tempt a user to treat all adjacency as equivalent. Relative, same-key, and same-mode neighboring relationships have different theoretical explanations even when a performance decision ultimately depends on listening.
Worked example: A minor
Choose A minor. The mapper returns 8A. It shows:
- Relative-mode partner: 8B, C major.
- Counterclockwise same-mode neighbor: 7A, D minor.
- Clockwise same-mode neighbor: 9A, E minor.
The relative pair uses the same diatonic pitch collection in its basic form. D minor and E minor do not share that entire collection with A minor; they are neighboring positions in the system. If your source track modulates or emphasizes chromatic tones, the displayed relationship may describe only part of what you hear.
Now imagine you accidentally entered C major because an automated service labeled the track that way, while your chosen transition occurs in an A-minor breakdown. The mapper will correctly return 8B for your input but cannot challenge the premise. Use the listening guide and scope the relevant section before trusting the code.
Worked example: E-flat major
Enter E-flat major. The center code is 5B. Its relative minor is C minor at 5A. Same-mode neighbors are 4B, A-flat major, and 6B, B-flat major.
Enharmonic input can complicate display. D-sharp major is rarely used because its conventional diatonic spelling requires double sharps, while E-flat major is common. The mapper normalizes supported equivalents to a practical label and reports that choice. This is a display decision, not a claim that enharmonic spellings are functionally identical in every score.
What the wheel can help you do
The wheel can provide a compact vocabulary for organizing a collection whose key labels you have already established. It can help you notice a relative pair or compare adjacent same-mode positions before listening to a transition. It can also make a discussion between collaborators more concise when everyone understands the system.
For education, the map is a bridge into deeper concepts. Asking why 8A and 8B are paired leads to relative keys. Asking why adjacent positions feel related leads toward fifth relationships and common tones. The guide page expands those ideas without presenting the graphic as a substitute for harmony.
What it cannot tell you
A code cannot represent tempo, meter, groove, phrase alignment, instrumentation, spectral balance, dynamics, tuning drift, vocal overlap, lyrical meaning, or audience context. Two tracks at neighboring codes can clash for many reasons. Tracks with distant codes can work through a planned modulation, percussion-only passage, effect, cut, or other artistic technique.
The 24-position map also simplifies music that is modal, chromatic, atonal, microtonal, or tonally changing. A single whole-track label may obscure section-level movement. The mapper covers only supported major and minor inputs.
Do not treat the code as certification, a licensing fact, or a proprietary library lookup. No song data enters the page.
A responsible workflow
First, identify the exact recording and section in your own notes. Second, state the key and confidence. Third, map that entered label. Fourth, listen to the proposed transition through the phrase boundary. Fifth, record whether the relationship was musically useful.
If key confidence is low, keep the code provisional. If a transition fails, do not force it because the numbers appear compatible. The wheel is an index into possibilities, not an instruction to ignore your ears.
