One place for what you actually observed

A song analysis workbench should help you think, not hide the steps. This local worksheet brings several common listening notes together: a known tempo, an observed key, a meter, a confidence level, and a short explanation. After you enter them, deterministic calculations add timing references and conventional key relationships. The result is a compact observation card whose facts, assumptions, and uncertainties remain distinct.

The workbench never listens to a file. It cannot inspect a streaming link, download a track, use your microphone, or search a recording database. You are responsible for the observations. The browser is responsible only for organizing them and applying the formulas shown beside the result.

Before you fill in the fields

Choose a passage, not merely a song title. A chorus may be more stable than an ambient introduction, and a bridge may change tonal center. Give the observation a label such as “Chorus, studio version” or “Bars 17-24.” This label stays in the active page and helps you remember the scope.

For Known BPM, enter the pulse rate you intend to count. If another musician hears the same passage at half-time, both readings may describe useful metric levels. The field accepts 20 through 400 so accidental zeros and implausibly large entries are caught without pretending that music cannot exist outside the range.

For Observed key, select a supported major or minor key, or leave it unknown. Unknown is an honest value. Meter beats per bar gives the numerator, while Meter beat unit identifies the notated beat assumption. The current timing calculation treats the entered BPM as referring to that selected beat unit; it does not infer notation.

Confidence is not a score produced by the site. It is your own low, medium, or high assessment. The notes field is where you preserve reasons: final bass note, recurring cadence, pitch-class emphasis, a possible modulation, a tempo drift, or a disputed downbeat.

How the result is calculated

Milliseconds per beat equals 60,000 divided by BPM. At 120 BPM, one counted beat lasts 500 milliseconds. Seconds per bar equals the entered beats per bar multiplied by 60, then divided by BPM. At 120 BPM in a four-beat bar, that is 4 × 60 ÷ 120, or 2 seconds.

When a supported key is present, the workbench retrieves conventional relationships rather than analyzing harmony. For E-flat major, it can show C minor as the relative minor and E-flat minor as the parallel minor. It can also map the entered key to a Camelot code. These are references derived from the label you supplied, not independent confirmations of the label.

The result deliberately separates “You entered” from “Derived from your entry.” That distinction prevents a calculated value from looking like fresh evidence.

Worked example: a verse with an uncertain center

Suppose you are studying a verse that lasts eight measures. You counted 84 quarter-note beats per minute and four beats per bar. D major sounds plausible because phrases settle on D, but the harmony spends long periods on B minor. You select D major and medium confidence, then write: “D closes both phrases; B minor occupies measures three and four; recheck the pre-chorus.”

The card reports about 714.29 milliseconds per beat and about 2.86 seconds per bar. It shows B minor as the relative minor, which explains why the two centers share a key signature without deciding which one governs the passage. The key reference makes your ambiguity easier to describe. It does not erase it.

If you later notice that the downbeat was misplaced or that the pulse should be felt at 168, reset the worksheet and make a new scoped observation. The workbench does not keep a history, so copy any record you want to retain into your own notes before leaving.

Reading the confidence line

Low confidence can mean the evidence is sparse, the passage is transitional, or your listening environment is poor. Medium confidence can mean several clues agree while one alternative remains credible. High confidence should mean you can name converging evidence, not that a tool displayed a polished card.

A productive note often follows this pattern:

  • Scope: which version, section, and bars?
  • Observation: what BPM, key, or meter did you choose?
  • Evidence: what recurring events support it?
  • Counterevidence: what makes another reading plausible?
  • Next check: what will you listen for on the next pass?

This structure makes a future revision feel like progress rather than failure.

Limitations worth keeping visible

The formula assumes a stable BPM across the scoped passage. Expressive timing, rubato, accelerando, and live drift require several observations rather than one average. Seconds per bar also assumes the BPM refers to the beat unit you selected. Compound meters may be felt in dotted beats even when written with an eighth-note denominator.

Key relationships cover conventional major and minor labels. They do not interpret church modes, blues inflection, atonal music, microtonality, changing tuning systems, tonicization, or modulation. Notes are not saved. Closing, refreshing, or resetting the page can remove them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a YouTube URL here?

No. There is no URL field and no remote retrieval. The workbench accepts only the observations listed in its labels.

What if I do not know the key?

Leave it unknown. Timing fields still work, and the card will say that no key was supplied instead of inventing one.

Why does the tool ask for a beat unit?

BPM names a rate but not the notation by itself. The beat-unit field records what one counted pulse represents in your worksheet.

Does medium confidence change the calculation?

No. Confidence is displayed as your editorial assessment. It does not alter arithmetic or create a probability.
